“they have the clocks, but we have the time”
A series of ambient poems presented across video and print, Temporal Disruption Culture Club uses language, loops and spirals to unmoor the viewer from the tyranny of linear time.
At its center is a continuous poem written on a 1,000-foot roll of paper. A receipt printer adds one line every minute, and the poem piles up on the gallery floor as a record of time passing. Behind it, a television scrolls more poems and texts. As the paper accumulates, the orderly measurement of minutes becomes excessive, unruly and increasingly difficult to contain.
Clocks are not neutral; they are political objects that enable and embody the historical coordinates of empire, market expansion, and labor subjugation. Standardized linear time was forcibly mapped across the globe to synchronize colonial commerce, trapping us in a monochronic grid optimized for machine productivity rather than the deeper rhythms of the body and the planet. Today, this relentless productivity fetishism turns our presence into a scarce commodity to be optimized, while corporate interests attempt to colonize the possible futures in our collective imagination. Whose future are we living in?
Temporal Disruption Culture Club draws on techniques both ancient and novel to create a playful aesthetic intervention against the ubiquity of hegemonic time. By allowing pasts, presents and futures to overlap and re-relate, this fugitive spacetime asks us to re-draw and re-envision our relationship with time. What types of alternative, felt dimensions can we imagine? Can we create together?
